Run Shop
The sacred place in the running community is the local run shop. In today’s online shopping world, a vast majority of people opt to purchase their shoes from online sites, enjoying the convenience of having them show up the next day on their doorstep ready to lace up and go.
Amidst the move to impersonal, convenience and price driven shopping, how have these local run stores continued to thrive? They thrive on community.
In Colorado we are blessed with many locally owned and operated run stores. Runners High, Berkeley Park Running Company, and Runners Roost are the ones that come to mind most in supporting the local community. Our shop of choice is Runners Roost. They now have 7 locations in Colorado but started as one shop on Colorado Blvd. and Mexico in 1977.
While there have been 3 owners in that 56 year span, they have all been Colorado residents, passionate about equipping people for the run. The staff are all running enthusiasts that take time to learn the technical details about each shoe and piece of clothing to best be able to align gear with a person’s needs.
The local run stores take pride in hosting spike nights for local high school cross country and track teams and supporting training groups and events. What truly makes the local run shop a sacred place, however is their community run clubs.
Almost every run store I’ve been in around the globe hosts at least run club event from their store every week, rain or shine. Run club enthusiasts show up and spend time putting one foot in front of the other in community every week. The run clubs are as consistent as a Sunday church service and are inclusive of all levels of run enthusiasts, from first timers to seasoned marathon racers. For me, and our family, running is a sacred place.
Matt and Molly have been married for almost 20 years and running together the entire time. Both race triathlon and have been in the top ranks at the world championship level, including Ironman World Championships and the 70.3 World Championships.
More than any race, they love the lifelong friends they have made by participating in the sport and running with their children Mason (5) and Madison (3) around the neighborhood.
