Thrift Store
The thrift store is a sacred place. Thrift stores are creative ways to steward both financial and material resources. They encourage re-use and reduce waste. Thrift stores exist as a counter script to the dominant narrative of consumerism in our culture. Because the items they receive are one-of-a-kind, there is a sense of adventure and a search for unknown treasures at a thrift store. Many thrift stores are involved in community-based programs providing job training and employment services for those who have barriers to finding work.
The Craft Box, established in 2012, offers new creative life to craft items. The idea of creating a thrift store for crafters was born from founders who realized the value of reusing an overflowing inventory of craft items they had accumulated from a lifelong passion for crafting. Affectionately known as “The Box”, they reduce waste by encouraging creativity through reselling craft items.
The Craft Box is a place where craft supplies are given new life and provide new crafters the opportunity to try new crafting projects without an expensive initial investment. As a thrift store, they sell materials and equipment below market value. The Craft Box encourages individuals and organizations in need of supplies to come to the shop where they will find quality items at discount. Each month a charity is adopted by The Craft Box. Hand-crafted items for the charities are made from donated materials. Their staff are all lifelong crafters with expertise in quilting, stamping, and scrapbooking.
The Craft Box is a specialty thrift store that cultivates creativity, community, and generosity. It is a place to create and re-create. The thrift store is a sacred place.
Thank you to Becky Rinehart, a lifelong crafter who shared the idea of a thrift store and The Craft Box as a sacred place.
