Music

He who sings prays twice.
— St. Augustine

Father in Heaven,
You rejoice over us with singing
And put songs of deliverance on our lips.
You counted off creation in rhythm:
Night and day, rest and work,
Summer, winter, autumn, and spring.
Teach us how to breathe in with wonder,
And join in the beautiful melody of Your creativity.
Inspire us to sing songs of joy,
For all You have done!

Jesus,
You are the generative Word
That gave voice to all creation.
Make our toes tap, hands clap,
and feet dance with joy.
May we join the music
Of mountains, hills, and trees
For all You have done!

Holy Spirit,
You who fill artists with inspiration,
Inspire us to sing a new song to You.
Grant us Your wonder-working power
That we may sing songs of rejoicing
with those who rejoice,
And ballads of grief with those who grieve.
One day soon our song will rise,
For tears will be no more,
And our music will join in the chorus
From the wedding supper of the Lamb
For all You have done!

Amen.
