Dark Mornings

Father in Heaven,

Thank You for dark mornings,
Where light unhurriedly arrives.
May rhythms of being rooted
Reform in us as autumn assuredly arrives.

May the evenings when light leaves early,
Air cools quickly, and trees let their leaves go,
Be a season to welcome neighbors
To shared tables and glowing fires.

May days framed by darkness,
Long shadows and golden twilight,
Compel us to consider the mystery
Of Your faithful Presence in each season of life.

May Your grace allow us to be gentle
With ourselves and others,
As we navigate the shift of seasons
And the lack of daylight.

May the darkness
Which dilates our eyes,
Retrain our vision to gaze longer and deeper
For the glimmer of hope and faintest of light.

Thank You for dark mornings,
The vastness of the night,
Where our prayers, like watchmen,
Await Your Light.

Amen.
